Created jointly by NEBOSH and the UK Health and Safety Executive, this qualification is designed for managers, safety representatives and HSE advisers in oil and gas, chemicals, plastics and pharmaceuticals.
01Relevant to production plants, refineries, chemical facilities and bulk storage operations where hazardous substances, loss of containment, fire or explosion can cause major harm.
02PSM concentrates on process hazards and major-accident prevention; it is not a substitute for broad occupational H&S study such as the NEBOSH GIC.
Describe the role of leadership in process safety.
Explain how process risk is managed and how process-safety hazards are controlled.
Recognise why fire and explosion protection are central process-safety themes.
Distinguish process-safety learning from general workplace hazard awareness.
Consider leadership and organisational attention to process safety and the management of major-accident risk.
Workplace lens: consider how operational priorities and decisions can affect process-safety controls.
Study the management of risk associated with process-industry activities and the prevention of major accidents.
Workplace lens: discuss how a change in an operating condition may need to be considered in process-risk management.
Explore controls for process-safety hazards, keeping the focus on the risks that can lead to major accidents.
Workplace lens: connect a process hazard with the controls intended to prevent escalation.
Examine fire and explosion protection as a specific part of process-safety learning.
Workplace lens: consider how fire and explosion hazards differ from routine occupational hazards.
Study the principles behind safe plant start-up and shutdown, asset integrity and maintenance, safety-critical systems, dangerous-substance storage and emergency planning. The course develops process-risk understanding for operational and HSE responsibilities; specialist plant design and site operating authorisations remain separate requirements.

There are no formal academic entry requirements. An underpinning knowledge of health and safety is recommended, together with English proficiency equivalent to IELTS 6.0 or higher.
PSM1 covers four elements: process safety leadership, management of process risk, process safety hazard control, and fire and explosion protection.
It is the systematic management of hazards that can cause major incidents, including fires, explosions and releases of hazardous substances. It brings together equipment integrity, operating procedures and organisational controls.
Occupational safety addresses harm from everyday work activities. Process safety focuses on preventing major events such as toxic releases, explosions and large fires. Effective operations need both.
Set clear responsibilities, maintain competence, allocate resources, monitor performance and learn from incidents. Leadership decisions must support the controls that prevent major accidents.
Identify process hazards, evaluate their consequences and likelihood, select effective safeguards and review risks when operating conditions, equipment or procedures change.
Loss of containment occurs when a substance escapes from the equipment or system intended to hold it. Depending on the substance and conditions, the release can cause toxic exposure, fire, explosion or environmental harm.
No. PSM develops understanding of process hazard identification and risk management. Leading specialist HAZOP studies requires additional competence and experience.
Process-risk management includes recognising how changes to equipment, substances, procedures and operating conditions affect hazards and safeguards. Controlled change is essential to preventing major accidents.
Yes. Fire and explosion protection is one of the four syllabus elements, alongside leadership, process-risk management and process safety hazard control.
Unit PSM1 is assessed through a 90-minute online multiple-choice examination in English.
The PSM1 assessment contains 40 multiple-choice questions, including questions based on workplace scenarios.
The pass mark is 60%. Successful candidates receive the NEBOSH HSE Certificate in Process Safety Management.
